Thriller Trailer Analysis

Sicario

The themes of the film Sicario I denoted were to do with forensic scientists, the police force, crime, investigation and action. One thing from the narrative I can tell is that Sicario is a mission which the characters have to adjust to, however they feel isolated. An enigma Sicario creates is identity. The mise-en-scene used within Sicario range, for instance a range of props were used such as guns and explosions, the range of places it was set like the desert and the city. Also, as they are police officers they are wearing police uniform which connotes status role. In the film Sicario, I denoted a range of characters. These characters are a antagonist who is a male and an anti-stereotypical girl who connotes as strong, this could suggest she can find a way out of a bad situation.

The Walk

The narrative of the film The Walk, I denoted to be, a man who is planning on walking across a wire which will be hooked from one top of the twin towers to the other. The themes I denote in this film are action, romance and the law. I denote the theme romance in this film because it shows a man and a women’s relationship, I also denote the law because it states that if the man accomplishes his mission he is breaking the law. The Walk creates several different enigmas such as why would you risk death? What happens if the wire breaks? Does he succeed? It is important for a film to create enigmas so the audience stays hooked to the film. The mise-en-scene I denote in The Walk is that it is set in New York, therefore this connotes realism. The characters I denote in the film The Walk is the man who is the main character, he connotes determination because he wants to accomplish his goal and will take whatever risk to do so.

Crimson Peak

In the film Crimson Peak, I can denote themes of paranormal activities taking place because ghosts are used within the film. Crimson Peak also denotes the theme romance as the narrative is about a man and woman who get married. The film Crimson Peak, creates a lot of enigmas such as what is below the level? Why do the brother and sister own that house? These questions help keep the audience entertained whilst the storyline unravels. The mise-en-scene used within Crimson Peak is very typical of the thriller genre, they use a twisting staircase which connotes mystery. The costume is also denoted to be Victorian/Gothic. The characters in this film which stand out is the woman, who is the sister to the man. She stands out because she is suspicious and very weary of the woman her brother marries.

San Andreas

From the film San Andreas, I can denote the themes of action, disaster/eco. The themes disaster/eco connote a manmade or natural event happening which wipes out the population and buildings. In San Andreas this happens and it causes mass destruction of buildings and mass panic within people. The mass panic within people portrays the odds against survival. One key enigma San Andreas creates is that will everyone survive? This enigma is essential to the film as the narrative is based around people dying and surviving. The mise-en-scene in San Andreas is significant, for example props such as helicopters and police cars are used, this engages the audience that something bad is going to happen. San Andreas is also set in a city; this is typical of the thriller genre as innocent bystanders will now be involved within the mass destruction of the city. The characters within the film San Andreas, I denote to be innocent bystanders and a strong male protagonist. I also denoted a woman sat in a car waiting for the man to protect her, this is stereotypical of the thriller genre as it adheres to the woman being a damsel in distress.

Legend

The film Legend creates the theme of crime/gangster. This is denoted as violence is portrayed with the use of guns within a fight scene. The film Legend also creates the theme of wealth as it shows how much money these characters have as they are portrayed as the ‘elite’ of London. Elements of comedy are also used within this film to distract the audience from a hostile/serious scene. Legend creates the enigmas between the battle of crime and law. The mise-en-scene used in Legend are cigarettes/cigars. These props are used to connote the gangster lifestyle. The use of these props are also denoted in the East End of London in clubs where the use of alcohol is. The film Legend has used the role of characters effectively. Binary oppositions have been used, for instance gangsters vs police.

Bridge of Spies

The themes used within the film Bridge of Spies are espionage and legal. The narrative of the film is about a lawyer (who is male) who is trying to free a man from prison who is supposedly a enemy spy. Bridge of Spies denotes the political, legal and personal struggle. For instance, the political struggle is that the man is meant to be an enemy, the legal struggle is that he isn’t who he says he is and the personal struggle is that the lawyer is receiving abuse at his family home from people who do not agree with what he is trying to do. An enigma created in the Bridge of Spies is that will he succeed with his case? This helps keep the audience hooked as they’ll try and unravel the storyline. The mise-en-scene used in the film Bridge of Spies consists of the use of the court room, the family home and a clip which is set in East Berlin by the Berlin Wall. This help connotes what period of time the film is set in and the historical context it is based around. The main characters I denoted in the Bridge of Spies are the lawyer and the enemy spy. I also denoted a binary opposition in the Bridge of Spies which is the East vs the West.
